Benefit Trips: Cancertacular will sponsor a trip to Philadelphia, Saturday, March 6, departing the Viewmont Mall near Sears at 10 a.m. and arrive at the Reading Terminal Market at lunchtime. Perfume/Cologne Sale: The Marian Community Hospital Auxiliary will hold a perfume and cologne sale Thursday, March 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Marian Hall, 141 Salem Ave., Carbondale. These are guaranteed authentic brands provided by Perfume Oasis. Along with brand new styles and hard-to-find older brands of perfume, there will be a variety of candy, nuts and dried fruits. Tax Help from The U: Accounting students from The University of Scranton will assist residents with their tax returns as part of the volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) program.
The service is free for clients with low and moderate incomes who need help with their basic tax returns. Hours at the Valley Community Library, 739 River St., Peckville, will be Thursday, March 11: 3-7 p.m.; Tuesday, March 16, 1-5 p.m.; and Wednesday, March 31: 1-5 p.m. An appointment is required. Hours at the Carbondale Senior Community Center, 66 N. Church St., will be Monday, March 29: 4-8 p.m. Call 343-1267, ext. 222, to make an appointment.

Arts Bazaar: Another edition of the NEPA Independent Arts Bazaar will be held Saturday, March 20, noon to 5 p.m. at Eleanor Rigby’s, 603 Scranton-Carbondale Highway, Jermyn, featuring food, beverages and live music. Fashion Show: Marian Community Hospital’s auxiliary will host a spring fashion show Sunday, March 14, at Peebles Department Store, 89 Brooklyn St., Carbondale, beginning at 10 a.m. The show will feature attire for children, teens and adults. Tickets are $12, which includes refreshments and a discount coupon for Peebles. A 50/50 raffle will also be held. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the hospital. VFW Auxiliary: The ladies auxiliary for the 10th District of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet Sunday, March 14, at 2 p.m. at the McHugh-Bushweller Post No. 3474, 110 Chestnut St., Dunmore. All auxiliaries are reminded to bring their ticket returns. Plans for the state department presidents visit will be finalized. President Kim Frisbie will preside.

Bus Trip: The Double “R” Twirlettes are sponsoring a bus trip to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City Wednesady, March 17. The $35 cost includes bus transportation, driver tip and a snack. The bus will leave from Peckville. Call 489-1935 for more information.

Genealogical Research: The Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania has scheduled the following speakers for its monthly meetings.
• March 17: Joe Titti, family history researcher, formerly from Archbald, will talk about eastern European immigrants to Lackawanna County.
• April 21: Hyde Park Players will present colorful vignettes.
• May 19: Ted Frutchey will talk about the Welsh in America.
• July 21: Ann O’Hara and Gloria McCullogh from the Wayne County Historical Society will speak.
• August 18: Tom Kennedy will speak about the gravity railroad.

Art Exhibit: The Main Street Gallery, located in the Greater Carbondale Area Chamber of Commerce, 27 North Main St., will host its first-anniversary juried art exhibit and reception Friday, March 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The exhibit will showcase works by regional artists and music by The Jazz Assassins. Flea Market: The Browndale Fire Co., 620 Marion St., Browndale, will be hosting an indoor flea market selling fire equipment from various fire departments in the area on Saturday, March 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local fire departments are welcome to participate at a cost of $10 per 10-by-10-foot space. Easter Egg Hunt: The annual Archbald Easter egg hunt will be held Saturday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at the Archbald Athletic Club Field, Export Lane. There will be two divisions: infants to age 5 and ages 6–12. Goody bags will be distributed. There will be a bike raffle and an Easter bonnet contest. Face painting will be available and a 5-by-7-inch photo with the Easter Bunny will be available for a small donation.

Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament: The Carbondale chapter of UNICO is holding a benefit Texas hold ’em poker tournament Sunday, April 11, at Genetti Manor, 1505 Main St., Dickson City, to benefit the 2011 UNICO national convention. Buffet and check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. Tournament begins at 2 p.m. A $100 buy-in includes a hot buffet. Prizes include TVs and a stainless-steel gas grill. Trips Planned: A group from Mainly Hair by Dorie in Peckville is planning two trips. On Sunday, May 16, the group will take a World Yacht Cruise around New York City. The trip includes bus transportation, a buffet brunch and entertainment and some free time at South Side Seaport. The cost is $90. The group is also planning a cruise Thursday to Monday, July 8-12, on the Carnival Glory. Inside cabins are $490 per person and balcony cabins are $630 per person. Snowfall Reminder: Archbald residents are reminded not to plow snow into borough streets. It delays snow cleanup and creates unsafe conditions. Sidewalks abutting residential properties must be clear of snow within 24 hours after the end of the snowfall. Citations will be issued to property owners who do not comply.

Envelope Drive: Queen City Hose Co. No. 8 of Olyphant is conducting its annual envelope fund drive through the end of March. Residents are asked to mail their donation using the envelope provided or drop them off at the borough building.

Membership Drive: The Family of Saint Anthony’s membership drive for 2010 is currently underway. Persons who are committed to perserving the traditions of St. Ubaldo Day are welcome to apply. Membership dues are $10; $20 for memberships to both the Family of St. Anthony and the St. Ubaldo Society. Membership is free to children under 18 years of age. Dig Out Hydrants: The Dickson City Fire Department asks borough residents to shovel out around any fire hydrants in their neighborhood. Shoveling out a three-foot area around the hydrant will allow department personnel to see the hydrant during an emergency and also hook up supply lines more quickly.

Dance Classes: Line dance classes have resumed Mondays, 10-11 a.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 River St., Carbondale. The instructor is Debbie Koshinski, owner/operator of Step By Step Dance Studio in Scranton. All ages are welcome and beginners will be given extra time. Wall of Immigrants: The Jessup Community Fountain Committee has completed a monument in Jessup’s Station Park dedicated to the immigrants who built America, consisting of a fountain and a wall featuring three stone panels that will be engraved with immigrants’ names and personal information. The committee invites residents to submit the names of their ancestors to be included on the memorial. Orders will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis. The memorial is open to all immigrants of all nationalities, and not only those with ties to Jessup. For more information, call 383-1217, 383-2171 or 383-0211 for more information. 
 
Plaza Pavers: You can still purchase engraved paving stones that will be placed at the nearly complete plaza at Archbald Memorial Park at the former site of the Archbald High School. Bricks measuring 6-by-9 inches can be purchased for $100. Bricks measuring 12-by-12 inches are available for $250; $275 with a business, club or school logo. The purchase of pavers helps to defray the cost of the park. You can choose to place your stone in the veterans area, the gazebo area or the memorial area. Library Friends: The Friends of the Valley Community Library is a volunteer group whose primary purpose is to promote and support the library’s functions, resources, services and needs. Through fund-raising efforts the group provides activities, materials and services not included in the budget of the library. Membership dues are $5 per year. The group meets the third Monday of the month from September to June. All interested parties are welcome to attend and membership is open to all. Throop Seniors: Anyone wishing to join the Throop seniors group can do so by attending their weekly gathering Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Throop Civic Center, 500 Sanderson St., Throop. Seniors do not have to be Throop residents to attend.

Emergency Kits: The Carbondale/Forest City American Red Cross is selling emergency preparedness supplies as part of a fundraising drive. It is selling an AM/FM water-resistant radio with weather alerts, TV-VHF, flashlight, siren and cell phone charger for $59.95 and a road hazard triangle kit for $25.95. Flag Kits: The Olyphant Lions Club is selling 3-by-5-foot American flag kits for $15 and replacement flags for $8 each. They can be purchased at Bosak’s Choice Meats, 524 Burke By-pass, Olyphant or by calling 489-8816.

Volunteers Sought: The Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Peckville, is seeking volunteer help. The society is a non-profit group that traces family trees. Call 383-7661 for more information.

Scout Uniforms: Boy Scout Troop 21, chartered since 1928 to Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Dickson City, is asking for donations of used Boy Scout uniforms: shirts, pants, shorts and belts. Call 489-4626 or visit vbvm.org/troop21 for more information.

Cell Phone Dropoff: American Legion Post No. 411, 508 Church St., Jessup, now has a collection box for old, used and unwanted cell phones. The phones will be reconditioned and sent to our troops overseas. Phones can be dropped off at the post’s collection box anytime.
