The Northeast Social Dance Club will celebrate its fifth anniversary with - what else? - a dance Saturday, Aug. 7, 8:30 p.m. to midnight at the Disabled American Veterans Hall, 516 Storrs St., Dickson City.

"A group of friends formed the club in August of 2005," recalled Paul Vitiello, one of the founding members. "Our primary reason was because we wanted a non-smoking venue. Quickly we realized we could be successful and wanted to find charities to whom we could donate our proceeds. On our Web site, northeastsocialdanceclub.com, is a list of charities we have donated to since 2006. To date, we donated approximately $30,000."

Vitiello says the group is the largest social dance club in northeastern Pennsylvania, with more than 70 paying members. Normally non-members are asked to pay $5 admission, but admission is free to the anniversary dance.

"We will provide light food with a cash bar. Anyone who would like to see what our club is about is welcome to join us for this free dance," Vitiello said. "The music includes swing, jitterbug, cha cha, slow dance, line dance and country.

The schedule of dances for the rest of the year looks like this: Sept. 4 and 18 (benefit for The ARC Auxilliary, sponsored by Pulman Interiors), Oct. 2 and 16 (benefit for The Women's Resource Center, sponsored by attorney Robert Munley), Nov. 6 and 30 (benefit for Disabled American Veterans, sponsored by The Honesdale National Bank) and Dec. 4 (benefit for The Salvation Army, sponsored by Paul and Doreen Vitiello).
