State Rep. Ed Staback's 17th annual junior shooting competition will be Saturday, Sept. 11, at the state game lands 300 shooting range, off Salem Street on Archbald Mountain. Rain date will be Sunday, Sept. 12.

Held in conjunction with the Richmondale Hunting Club and the Scranton Chapter of the National Rifle Association, the competition is for youths ages 10 through 18, with the following divisions: 10, 11-13, 14-16 and 17-18. Ten-year-olds will shoot from a sitting position only. Trophies will be awarded for the top three competitors from each age group in both categories.

"This event has been growing each year with more and more young shooters getting involved in the sport," Staback said. "That's encouraging to guys like me who want to see the younger generation learning the skills needed for outdoor shooting sports, skills like patience, concentration, and sportsmanship. The junior shoot is something that I, right along with all the shooters, look forward to all year."

Sign-in begins at 8 a.m. and will close at 10 a.m. All firearms used by the participants will be inspected. The competition begins at 9 a.m.

Pre-registration is necessary and can be done by contacting Staback's office at 876-1111 weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This competition will be limited to 250 competitors only. Lunch will be provided for the competitors.

"All competitors will need to furnish their own gun," Staback said. "Unlike years in the past, when firearms were available for the borrowing, only shooters with their own .22 rifles will be able to participate this year." No semi-automatic rifles will be permitted. Ammunition and earplugs will be provided to shooters; each participant is urged to bring their own eye protections.

Only standard .22-caliber rifles will be allowed; no heavy-barrel or competition guns. Guns will be checked for compliance. Separate categories of competition will be held open sights and scopes. Targets will be 25 yards away.

Shooting instructors will be on site to assist all competitors. The instructors will include NRA members, members certified by the state police, representatives of the Richmondale Gun Club and members of local police departments. Also participating in the days' activities will be representatives and displays from the Wild Turkey Federation.

A number of guns, including .22 rifles and shotguns, will be among the prizes. Winners must be present to receive their prizes.
