Dozens of people braved damp conditions and temperatures in the low 40s Saturday to get some exercise and raise money for a Scranton nonprofit.

About 65 people participated in the Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation's second-annual Perky Turkey 5K Run/Walk at Nay Aug Park.

The hospice, which is based on North Main Avenue in Scranton, helps critically ill patients and their families in crisis situations. The organization provides money for rent, utilities and other expenses.

"We're supported only by donations," said Becky Klepadlo, the foundation's volunteer coordinator, before the event started near the park's old amusement rides section.

Last year, the hospice raised $3,500, and Miss Klepadlo said the goal was to match that amount. The outdoor event is the organization's largest fundraiser, she said.

Chris Kidwell of Clarks Summit brought her 8-year-old daughter, Claire, to take part in the outing.

Mrs. Kidwell volunteered at a hospice in Georgia before moving to the area.

"I want to get back into running and do something with my daughter," Mrs. Kidwell said.

"Since it's not snowing yet, I can do it."
