School’s out, and your kids are on the loose. One group trying to help you give them interesting, safe things to do — and prevent everything they’ve learned for the last nine months from leaking out of their ears — are the two branches of the Lackawana County library system in our area, the Valley Community Library, 739 River St., Peckville, and the Carbondale Public Library, 5 North Main St., Carbondale.
Both libraries kicked off their summer reading program, entitled “Be Creative @ Your Library,” this week with a visit from folk musician “Uncle” Pete Tawny, who explored folk, bluegrass and homemade instruments, blends original and classic children’s songs with interaction, silliness and movement.
Coming up at the Valley Community Library:
• “Stranger Danger” Monday, June 22, at 6 p.m., hosted by Trooper Steve Kozlowski. “Stranger Danger” teaches young children (preschool to 10 years old) the danger of talking to or going with persons they don’t know. The presentation will focus on avoiding strangers and how to handle scary situations on their way to and from school and in the neighborhood. The program will also discuss “good touch” and “bad touch.”
• Special-needs story times are Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on June 23 and 30. The Library provides a place where parents can bring their special-needs children and meet other parents with children like theirs. Geared for children ages 2 and older; older children with specials needs are encouraged to volunteer. Although it is designed for children with various needs and diagnoses, any child is welcome to attend. Activities include a themed story time and craft. The story time helps teach children life skills. In addition, it focuses on how to work on their memory, tactile input, sensory issues and provides an atmosphere that is comfortable for children with special needs.
