Abigail Pidgeon, a senior at Valley View High School, has accepted an offer of appointment to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island. Abigail decided in the spring of her junior year that she wanted to attend the Naval Academy, so that she could serve as a career officer in the United States Navy. This past summer she attended the Naval Academy Summer Seminar, which is a week-long total-immersion experience targeting competitive candidates with strong STEM-related interests as a recruiting tool for USNA. She said the experience solidified her desire to complete her application for selection.

Abigail served as captain of the varsity basketball team this past season. She was on the Lackawanna League All-Star team and was named most valuable player. She is a four-year member of the marching band, and a four-year member of the track and field team where she holds the school records for the 110 and 300 hurdles. She is a member of the National Honor Society, a four-year member of student council, bio club, Spanish club, Leo club, and the Ping Pong club.

About 17,000 apply and about 1,300 are accepted. Once Abigail successfully completes the ten-month prep program, she will enter the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in the summer of 2019. She will be majoring in nuclear engineering. Abigail lives at home with her mom, Sarah.
