Following the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, students at Carbondale Area Elementary School voiced concern for Haitian children left homeless or orphaned by the disaster. The following week the students received a sandwich bag in which they were asked to collect coins. By the end of the week, students were sorting through a mountain of change. Aided by approximately $50 from the sale of “Haiti - I care” armbands at the school’s science fair, and $450 raised through a faculty “dress down day,” the total collected was $3,253.18. All proceeds will be given to the American Red Cross for use in earthquake relief.
