Mary Grace Rizzo of Throop was among 16 members of the class of 2010 to graduate from The University of Scranton's honors program. The program requires each student to complete a yearlong comprehensive research, creative or independent project. Rizzo's research, entitled "Bisphophonate-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: A Review," studied literature pertaining to the osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with bisphosphonate medications, which are used for cancer that has metastasized to the bone or other diseases related to increased bone resorption. Her research project was conducted with faculty mentor biology professor Dr. Michael Sulzinski.
Rizzo graduated from the university with a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in biology with minors in biochemistry and philosophy. She was also a member of the national Latin exam committee, Alpha Sigma Nu and the dean's list.
