Thirty 10th-grade Carbondale Area High School students from Christina Murakami’s English class, as well as some members of the Medical Careers Club, participated in a “Celebrating Your Health Care Hero” essay contest and were recognized with a certificate and movie passes to the Cinemark Movie Complex.

The program was put together by the Lackawanna County Workforce Investment Board and Youth Council. The primary goal was to promote career opportunities in health care, especially those occupations critically in demand, such as direct care, surgical technologist, radiologic technologists, physical therapist and occupational therapists.

Janet Rusnak is the advisor for the Medical Career’s Club.

The winning student was Sarah Vadella (right), who received a $100 gift card to Viewmont Mall.

“I picked my grandmother, Clara Vadella, who was a nurse in a Mental Health Rehabilitation Center. Unfortunately she was injured on the job and became disabled and could no longer work there. Even after her injury, she still worked her hardest to help others.”
