Annually, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) sponsor a patriotic essay-writing contest for eighth-graders. This year the topic was: “Is the Constitution still relevant?” The VFW also sponsors a similar contest for 10th-graders called “Voice of Democracy.”

This year’s winners at Carbondale Area High school were, from left: Mackenzie Mauro and Paul Pisarcik.
