VV Elem. Curriculum Workshops

The faculty of Valley View Elementary encourages parents of students at the school to participate in the curriculum workshops that will be held throughout the year. During the workshops, teachers provide parents with an explanation of the curriculum for the upcoming quarter, as well as strategies to assist parents in helping their children at home. Principal Maria Kishel believes these workshops provide quality information to parents on assisting their children in the learning process at home. Kishel stresses the importance of parent involvement in the educational process and the need for all parents to attend the curriculum workshops. Curriculum workshops are scheduled for the evenings of Wednesday, Jan. 15, and Tuesday, March 25. Reminders will be sent home with students prior to each workshop.

Veterans Program

Area veterans who are interested in going back to school can get a taste of college life through the Renewal Veterans Education and Transition Services (R-VETS) program offered free-of-charge at Marywood University.

Officials say the R-VETS initiative is designed to provide college access to veterans interested in pursuing post secondary education. They will be able to take free introductory courses in the areas of math, English and writing. Current Marywood student veterans can also use the program.

The program is open to a maximum of 15 participants.

Aside from being tuition-free, R-VETS also provides all supplies, books and other materials. It is taught by experienced faculty with the courses offered during the evenings or weekends.

The program does not use any VA education benefits, ensuring that the veteran has full entitlement once he/she enrolls in a post secondary education program.

To be eligible, an interested individual must have an honorable discharge or be currently serving in the military. Call 570-961-4746 for more information.

Before- and After-School Program

Dickson City Civic Center’s before- and after-school program is now under way. The program is designed to benefit working parents by providing an alternative environment conducive to physical activity, educational enrichment and age-appropriate socialization, for students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.

The center is a bus stop for the Mid Valley School District, including LaSalle and the Geneva School, and is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. When school is closed the center is open, with the exception of major holidays. Visit the center at 935 Albert St., call 570-383-1813 or visit the center’s Facebook page for more information.
