MV Head Start
The Mid Valley Head Start, 641 Simpson St., Throop, is accepting applications for the 2010- 2011 school year. Head Start offers services including, education, health, social and nutritional opportunities for both children and their families. Families must be income eligible and children must meet age requirements. Families are encouraged to apply early as the selection for the new school year will begin soon. ‘The Sound of Music’
Valley View High School will present “The Sound of Music,” Friday and Saturday, March 5-6, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 7, at 2 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 1 Columbus Drive, Archbald. Tickets are $8; $5 for students.

Track Parents
The Valley View Track Parents Association will meet Monday, March 8, at 7 p.m. at the Blakely Borough Building, 1439 Main St., Peckville. All parents of students in junior high and varsity track teams are urged to attend.

VV PTA Items
• The Valley View Elementary Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) will meet Tuesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. at Valley View Elementary Center, 901 Main St., Peckville. A parent workshop on “helping your child become a better reader” will be held. Child care is available and light refreshments will be served.
• The PTA will hold its second family fitness night Friday, March 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the elementary center. The night will feature dancing and an evening full of exercising and games. Admission will be two cans of food, which will be donated to local food pantries.
• The PTA will hold a “family night” Tuesday, March 16, 6-9 p.m. at AJ’s Club Soda, 1017 Main St., Peckville. AJ’s will donate 10 percent of the total food costs back to the PTA to help fund programs, field trips and other events.

VV Kindergarten
Valley View Elementary Center, 901 Main St., Peckville, will hold kindergarten information nights Wednesday, March 10, for 2010-2011 kindergarten students with last names beginning with A-K, and Thursday, March 11, for students with last names beginning with L-Z. The events will begin at 7 p.m. both nights. Call 489-7579 if you plan to attend.

Registration for kindergarten will be held at the elementary center Wednesday, March 24, for children whose last names begin with A through H; Thursday, March 25 for students whose last names begin with I through O; and Friday, March 26, for children whose last names begin with P through Z. Hours will be 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. each day.

Proof of age, residency and vaccinations are required. The enrolling child should be present so that speech, hearing, vision and developmental screenings can be conducted. Contact the school to learn which documents will be accepted and which vaccinations are needed. Pre-registration packets will be available for pick-up at the Elementary Center during the week of March 15.

Library Dedication
There Carbondale-Area High School library will be dedicated to Anne Fedorchak Friday, March 12, at 6 p.m. Fedorchak was a longtime librarian at the school. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served afterwards.

Haiti Concert
The Carbondale Area High School student council will host a concert to raise money for Haiti Friday, March 12, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 101 Brooklyn St., Carbondale. Live music will be provided by the students; there will be refreshments at intermission. Tickets are $3. All proceeds will be donated to the Earthquake Victim’s Relief Fund.

Spring Fling
Sacred Heart Elementary School will sponsor a “Spring Fling with the Poets” Saturday, March 20, at Sacred Heart Hall, 427 Hudson St., Mayfield. Doors open at 6 p.m., buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by dancing to the music of The Poets. Cash bar available. Door prizes, basket raffle and 50/50 drawing. Tickets are $33, two for $65 and available by advance sales only. Call 282-0340 to purchase tickets or for more information.

Registration will continue Thursday, March 25, 9:30-11:30 a.m. for children whose last names begin with N through S; and 12:30-2:30 p.m. for children whose last names begin with T through Z.

‘No, No, Nanette’
The Dunmore High School Crimson Company will present the roaring ’20s musical “No, No Nanette” Thursday through Saturday, March 18-20, and Wednesday through Saturday, March 24-27, at 7 p.m. at the school’s auditorium, 300 W. Warren St., Dunmore. Admission is $8; $5 for students and seniors.

YMCA Preschool
Scholarships are available for preschool classes at the Greater Carbondale YMCA, 82 N. Main St., Carbondale. Families who qualify can save 75 percent on tuition. Call for income requirements. The YMCA has openings available for the half-day (Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-Thursday 9-11:30 a.m.) or for the full-day classes. Call 282-2210 for more information.

Dean’s List
Sarah Pryal of Archbald has been named to the dean’s list at West Chester University. She is the daughter Denny and Angela Pryal, and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in early education.

Lakeland Preschool
The family and consumer science department of Lakeland High School is offering a free preschool program, open to residents of the Lakeland School District. In order to qualify, the resident child must be 3-5 years old and potty trained. The 10-week program will begin March 15.

There will be two sessions; both will alternate each week between classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Session I will run 11 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. Session II will run 1:10-2:30 p.m. Call 254-9485 or visit the high school for the appropriate forms to register your child. Enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Scholarship Offered
Dickson City Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 5937 is offering two $1,000 scholarships for students enrolled in the Mid Valley School District Secondary Center. The student must be a son or daughter of a parent/guardian who has served in the U.S. military and must be pursuing an educational program in business, computer technology, nursing or any of the various trades. For applications and additional details, see a Mid Valley guidance/career counselor or contact VFW officers at 489-1222 or 489-8976.

Seventh-Grade Initiative
The Greater Carbondale YMCA recently received a donation of $5,000 from a family wishing to remain anonymous. The former Carbondale residents presented the funds to the YMCA in memory of a deceased loved one. The funds will be used to support the Seventh-Grade Initiative, a new program from the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs.
The purpose of the Seventh-Grade Initiative is to promote the well-being of young adolescents at a time that is most critical to the development of choices about healthy lifestyles. Participating students will receive free memberships and use of the YMCA facility and youth programs.

Referrals of students eligible for this program can be made at the front desk, or by calling 282-2210. Funds are available now for membership scholarships. Financial assistance is available.
