Announcements, cancellations and postponements

All Lackawanna County libraries will remain closed until further notice. The Carbondale Public Library and the Valley Community Library are closed and all scheduled events, presentations, meetings and clubs are canceled. Books and other material people borrowed from a Lackawanna County library prior to the shut down will not be due back until the libraries reopen and there will be no late fees imposed on books with due dates after March 13. Requested items and items on hold will be kept at the library until it reopens.

Carbondale Area School District: Breakfast and lunch are available from a grab-and-go station in the high school courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Forest City Regional School District: Weinberg Food Pantry Distribution is Thursday from 1-3 p.m. at the high school. Breakfast and lunch distribution is Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Forest City Regional Elementary School (traffic circle for drive-by pick-up), Union Dale Methodist Church, 2839 Route 2067, Union Dale and Pleasant Mount Social Hall, 389 Great Bend Turnpike, Pleasant Mount. Families who are unable to attend but need food should call 570-785-2403 to schedule an alternate time for pickup or delivery.

Lakeland School District: Breakfast and lunch will be available from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mayfield Campus, 501 Linden St., Mayfield.

Mid Valley School District: Grab-and-go breakfast and lunch available for pick up from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mid Valley Elementary Center bus circle for any Mid Valley student each day of the school closures.

Valley View School District: Grab-and-go lunches are provided in the commons area of the high school, near gym and auditorium, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Honesdale officials voted to keep the pool complex closed throughout the summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic and state, county and borough declarations of disaster. The Parks and Recreation Commission will maintain and improve the facility at 1874 Fair Ave. while it’s closed. Council members also voted to cancel or postpone all requests for the use of public facilities through July 13. The Roots & Rhythm Music and Arts Festival, Memorial Day parade, Troop 1 chicken barbecue, Dessin Animal Shelter flower sale and Fourth of July fireworks display have also all been canceled or postponed.

The Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department has launched a new initiative during the COVID-19 to provide entertainment and education to the public, while supporting artists and other cultural producers. Lackawanna Arts & Culture Live! is an online series of programming, live streamed every Wednesday from now until July 1 from 7 — 9 pm on ECTV’s YouTube channel, Comcast Channel 19, and at Arts & Culture’s Facebook Live. The program will feature musicians, visual artists, performers, and lectures on history and heritage. St. James-George Episcopal Church in Jermyn has suspended all activities including but not limited to services, Bible study, food pantry and community meal.

Throop Borough Tax Office: Notice of temporary change of payment acceptance for 2020 tax bills. In order to insure the health and safety of the tax office personnel and borough residents due to the coronavirus pandemic, residents are to ONLY mail in tax payments to 436 Sanderson St. Throop, PA 18512. Checks should be made payable to Tax Collector — Throop. Receipts will be mailed if a self addressed, stamped envelope is provided.

Archbald and Throop borough recycling change: Due to the current health concerns regarding COVID-19, Lackawanna Recycling Center Inc. will no longer accept commingle material. The center will continue to accept deliveries of newspaper and cardboard. As a result, Archbald will stay on the current bi-weekly schedule for the recycling of newspaper and cardboard. There will be no commingle (glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jars, and aluminum/steel cans) pickup. Residents can store clean commingle until the health crisis subsides and services are restored or they can put the commingle material into the trash.

The Jessup 21st Century Association has set up Neighbors Helping Neighbors through its Facebook page. Donations are being collected that will go toward purchasing gift cards for local businesses. For more information or to donate, visit Jessup 21st Century Association’s Facebook page.

The St. Ubaldo Society Board of Directors has announced that due to circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the cancellation of the Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio (Jessup’s sister city) and large gatherings throughout the entire country this year there will be no St. Ubaldo Day in Jessup. As a symbol of solidarity for the 2020 Festa dei ceri, everyone is asked to put their flags out on their homes for the month of May.

The Dickson City Monument Committee has canceled the Memorial Day Parade and luncheon.

Shopa Davey Post 6082 of Peckville has canceled all Memorial Day services.

Jessup VFW Post 5544 and the Jessup American Legion Post 411 canceled this year’s Memorial Day services. They ask residents to display their flags in their honor on Memorial Day and in honor of our current Heroes who have put their lives in harm’s way.

The Scott Township Veterans Memorial Committee has canceled the May 23 Memorial weekend service.

Archbald Borough canceled its 2020 Summer Youth Camp and 2020 Memorial Day Parade.

The Blakely/Peckville Recreation Committee has canceled their planned annual events for this year, including the golf tournament which was scheduled for June 6 and the annual Junefest which was scheduled for June 19 and 20.

The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce has decided to further postpone its Empower: Women’s Leadership Conference to Thursday, September 10, 2020, as well as move the event to Kalahari Resort in the Pocono Mountains. The event was originally planned for April 17, then postponed to June 10. But, to ensure the continued safety of our community, the chamber felt it best to postpone the event to later in the year and move it to a venue that can better accommodate social distancing guidelines. Municipal notices

Throop Borough collection delay: For the Memorial Day holiday Monday, May 25, Second and Fourth Wards’ paper, grass and leaves recycling collections will be postponed until on Tuesday, May 26.

Throop Borough paper recycling change: Paper recycling has been changed to the Monday prior to your normal Tuesday recycling collection. Paper is to be placed in a bin to be collected. No bags are allowed. Call 570-489-8311 with any questions.

Archbald Borough grass clipping and leaves collection: Archbald Borough DPW will collect grass clippings and leaves every other week the same day as your regular recycling pickup beginning the week of April 27. Grass clippings and leaves are accepted by the borough only if they are in biodegradable bags. Lawn and leaf bags can be purchased at home and garden stores or the borough office for $2.50 for five bags. No plastic bags are allowed for this service. Vegetation set out in plastic bags will not be picked up by the borough or municipal Solid Waste Collection and Removal. There can be no commingling with any other materials; that is no brush or branches, no garbage, animal waste, dirt, construction material or other recyclables.

Branch chipping began on April 27. Call 570-876-1800 to be put on the list. Ashes will also be picked up the week of the 27th and then continue every other week. Yard Waste Pickup Weeks – on your recycling day: May 11 and 25, June 8 and 22, July 6 and 20, Aug. 3, 17 and 31 and Sept. 14 and 28.
