For Peckville resident Jeanette Mitchell, making her friends and neighbors look their best is a calling. She recently opened Shears Salon at 612 Main St., which is open Tuesday through Sunday for all your beauty needs. Check out Shears Salon Peckville on Facebook and Instagram and read on to find out more about what led her to open a shop!

Q: Why did you decide to open a salon?

A: I decided to open my own hair salon because I am an established hairstylist with an amazing clientele. I wanted to create a new fun place for people to relax, feel comfortable and have more of an experience when getting their hair done. It also allows for personal and professional growth, but most of all for the creative freedom.

I have been doing hair for almost 20 years. I have done many different types of jobs but always ended up doing hair. Being “behind the chair” is always where I feel my most true self, most confident and creative. I owned a successful hair salon from 2008-2015. I have worked in top salons that were voted Best Salon. I have always stayed current with the latest trends and newest techniques.

I am most looking forward to a new beginning of a fun, fresh and positive community atmosphere. Everything about opening a hair salon is exciting and new. But the things I’m most excited about are growing my clientele, meeting new people and having creative freedom.

Q: What was the hardest part of opening the shop? The easiest?

A: Opening a hair salon is not easy. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Some of the harder parts for me was the renovating, ordering supplies and equipment and the endless deadlines.

The easiest part of opening my salon was connecting with my clients to notify everyone of my new location. I live in Peckville, it is my community I have been servicing clients in and around the area for the last eight years. When I was looking for a new location, I wanted to be in the general vicinity to make it easier for my clients. Also, I wanted to be part of the up-and-coming small business community in Peckville.

Shear Salon is a neighborhood family hair salon that caters to all men women and children. It has a fun and welcoming environment and has a sense of community. Walk-ins are always welcome

Q: What kind of services do you offer?

A: Shears Salon offers everything for your hair care needs! I do all types of haircuts, colors, balayage, ombré, highlights, treatments and more! I pride myself on being up to date on the latest trends and techniques I love creating fun and unique color combinations.

The thing that would most set me apart is my knowledge, experience and creativity with cuts and colors. I specialize in color, including blonding techniques. And I have won the Valley Advantage Best Stylist award in 2017.

Q: What are some of the trends for hair care and beauty these days? How has that changed since you first started out?

A: A lot of hair trends today are influenced from hairstyles in the past but with a modern twist. This year, we’re seeing hairstyles that are a modern version of the shag. The hairstyles are much more textured, much more layered and have a lot more movement to the hair. With hair color we are seeing more one shade (solid) colors again.

The beauty industry is constantly changing and evolving. So it’s important to always continue education. When I first started out in the beauty industry, things were more literal and basic techniques. Haircuts were just straight cuts, no angles. Highlights were straight down the hair shaft in traditional form. Two or more colors in the hair were side by side, no blending the colors together. Nowadays, techniques and trends are more natural and “soft.” We could blend, mix and enhance colors together for ombré and balayage. There’s endless shapes to haircuts. And different techniques for every hair service.

If you’re looking for a day to pamper yourself, stop in to Shears Salon, get a fresh color and haircut with a paraffin wax hand treatment. You can chat or relax. You can look and feel good!

Q: When you’re not working, what do you love to do?

A: When I am not at work, above everything I love spending time with my family.

I have two beautiful daughters who are the lights of my life, a husband who supports me, a mother I can’t live without and a sister who’s my best friend. My circle is small but we are mighty.

When I’m not with one of them, I am usually organizing or cleaning something, I know some people might think of it as a chore but I enjoy it. I enjoy watching, researching and gathering information on products and hair techniques. I enjoy getting out and walking. I collect handbags and shoes. And I actually learned to love wearing black! My last few work places required wearing black and I always thought when I open my own salon again I would never wear black but here I am!
