Mayfield and Jermyn students got a surprise when they returned to school recently.

Teachers and administrators volunteered over the summer to help beautify Lakeland's Mayfield Elementary campus. Seasonal plants were potted and a stone arrowhead emblem was installed at the front of Mayfield. A Remembrance Rock was donated and installed by Jon Machiesky of Ecoview Property Maintenance. The rock will bear the names of Mayfield teachers who have passed while in service.

Curriculum Director Dr. Amy Thomas joined the Mayfield teachers as they painted and planted.

"I think it's amazing that everyone is willing to pitch in to create an excellent environment for the kids to return to," Thomas said.

The playground was sealed and painted with a foursquare pitch, hopscotch, giant checkers and new markings for sports. Playground equipment was donated by the Mayfield PTA.

"I really like the new look for the basketball court and the kickball field," says 5th grader Ryan Markey.
